Living Black at University 14 Living Black at University 15 This research focuses on the experiences of Black students, to avoid the homogenisation of non- White groups, which can hide significant differences between the experiences of those from different ethnicities. For the purposes of this research, the term ‘Black’ is used to include all those who are racialised as ‘Black’, whether home/EU or international students. Whilst there are differences between the experiences of Black home/EU students and Black international students, this research focuses on the impact of being Black on the student experience in accommodation. For further information on the definition of Black used in this research please refer to the appendix. Throughout the report we have used ‘Black’ to describe students racialised as Black as per the definition in the appendix, and for readability have used it within the text to describe the group of survey respondents who fall into the ‘Black/Black British’ ethnicity group. We have chosen to capitalise direct references to ethnicities in line with the Government’s ethnicity facts and figures style guide. 12 Where the use of the term for an ethnic group is not in direct reference to a person’s ethnicity or an ethnic group, for example ‘white space’, the ethnicity is not capitalised. 2.1 DEFINITIONS AND STYLISTIC CHOICES 12 https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/ style-guide
