The figure is much higher among LGBTQ+ applicants (46%) than among those who are not LGBTQ+ (21%). Higher ‑ than ‑ average loneliness is also seen among care‑experienced and estranged applicants, and applicants with a disability, including neurodivergent and mental health conditions. While universities and some accommodation providers offer targeted events and opportunities for students in these groups, it is important to understand their prior experiences which have left many of them feeling lonely.
